A bit of cleanup related to my web presence over the weekend. One of my coworkers asked me to tryout a new Facebook application. That led to:
I wrote about the home network disruption and my worst fears have come true. It is more of a lack of communication than service disruption. On Thursday, I sent an application for DSL plan change for my home internet with BSNL DataOne. Looks like they changed the plan on Friday evening, after a short service disruption. However, the line technicians didn’t know that my userid as well as the login domain are changed as part of the new plan. The back office didn’t bother to call me and update me.
After spending extended hours at work on Sunday and Monday, I decided to put this case to rest and headed to BSNL office early on Tuesday. The JTO at BSNL technical desk figured out what went wrong. He gave me the credentials for the new domain. Once I used that, the PPPoE link is established again. Being already late to work, I deferred the network reconfiguration until Wednesday evening.
As of now, the network configurations are redone and all systems are connected back to the routers. At home, I am back online now.
I am impressed by the speed offered by the new BSNL home combo plans. The speed is good and it is a real value for money.
My home internet is disrupted since Friday AM. This is the major outage I had since my subscription to BSNL dataone service in March 2005. I switched to multiple plans in these five years and am very happy so far with the service. But this time, looks like the service is going to be disrupted for a couple of more days.
The disruption came at a very wrong time: when I am sick and stayed home. Add to this, the burden of troubleshooting the problem by checking and reinitializing the home router (and thus reconfiguring the home network devices again.) This is real painful.
One funny technical side note. I was happily using my opensolaris desktop to troubleshoot the network problems. Note that the box is also running VirtualBox and a bunch of VMs. The moment the home router is turned off (and nwam detects linkdown for the default interface nge0), the vnic takes over as the default route. Even if the home router comes back again at a later time, I had tough time accessing the web interface of the home router. In such situations, the best thing to do is to restart the nwam service, so that it forces detection of the ethernet interface (nge0 in my case) prior to the vnic interface. Good old svcadm!
