IpCop

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Getting my hands dirty for the last couple of days on the IpCop firewall. This cool little linux distro is very simple to handle, yet very effective.

IP Cop Banner

The first time I logged into an existing host, I was a little clueless in the beginning. Especially the network setup parameters are not same as generic linux distributions. Once I typed “setup”, the whole confusion cleared off. I love the character based screens that are very efficient when accessing the system over ssh connections. Reminds me of my early days of Oracle (3.6 or so) forms. :-) .

Xkcd on blogs and tag clouds

This xkcd strip is very funny. Nice parody on Lion King.

Best ad of the season?

Monday, May 26th, 2008

I really liked the TV advertisement aired by Lazboy. The ad features the memorial day weekend sale in a really nice and simple theme. Customers simply relax in a store trying out their potential purchases. What a lazy idea? :-)

Cars, Linux and Moblin

Monday, May 26th, 2008

This phenomenon called opensource makes it easy for technologies to penetrate easily to consumer segments, without much of a worry about the intellectual property issues. See how linux is moving into the automobile segment. Checkout the Mobin initiative. Well, your next car could be your next linux server.

The cold weekend

Monday, May 26th, 2008

The memorial day weekend in Bay area is greeted by the cold weather. Most of the day is cloudy and makes my spare time (whatever little is there) null and void. However, managed to take a couple of hours of rest each of these days. That also means I am current on my personal email too, after about a month.

Air Quality

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

Smoke from the fire in Santa Cruz Mountains is descending in Bay Area now. The air quality is falling rapidly. There is an alert at work today about the air quality and we are advised to head home if we think the quality would be better at home. Not in my case! So staying back at work.

Adlabs multiplex

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

I am out of town and looks like I am missing lot of fun. Here is the review of the new Adlabs multiplex on Idlebrain.com. This place is about a mile and half from my home. More movies, more fun.

Remote installations, DRAC, ESX and network setup

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Imagine the scenario: You have a server that you installed ESX server on. You configured it for your local network. Then you shipped the box to a remote location. Someone in the lab connected the box to a switch. There is no human present when you are working on the system remotely. How do you reconfigure the network parameters?

In my case, for this DELL servers, I used DRAC to reach out to the box. Then I logged into the system and reconfigured network using esxcfg-vswif. The network interface that needs to be configured is vswif0.

The instructions are well documented here. The only piece missing is the edit of /etc/hosts, if the IP address at the old location is configured there (too).

A week

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

[ Written on Apr 30th, but uploaded later. ]

It is little more than a week in Bay area (and no blogs during the week.) That tells the story of how busy the life is. A quick look back at the week.

  • Visited 4 Indian Restaurants
  • Visited a pizza place
  • Visited a couple of far-east restaurants
  • Cooked food after a long time
  • Had dinners with a couple of old pals.

Thats the lighter side of life. Everything else is heavy :-) .
