Bicycling summary for last 3 months

31 Dec

Time to take a look at the progress of my bicycling in the last 3 months.

This month, I crossed the 250km mark. Its not much, but its a good progress in the right direction.

My average bicycling speed has increased. The approximate time recorded includes a few minutes of warming up before the actual ride and a few minutes spent on winding up. Even with those factors, there is an improvement in bicycling speed.

I may not be able to beat these numbers for the next couple of months, given the fact that I am traveling most of the days in the these two months.

Switchover to Android

26 Dec

For more than two years, I have been using Blackberry smartphone for my dialing and mail needs. The service is awesome especially for my email needs, but the charges I am paying for the relatively monopoly service are very high by today’s standards. Also, the handsets and the OS are relatively constrained and I am not using the full potential of the spare network bandwidth I have at home and at work.

Given this situation, I am compelled to make a switchover. Going by the choices in the market, there is no better option than Android based smartphones. I really like the Apple phones and their OS, but the feeling of lock-in always haunts me. So I decided to go with Android.

I bought a HTC Wildfire S, the entry level smartphone that should take care of my primarily email and social networking needs. Played with it for the last few hours and configured my email accounts, Google utilities, facebook and twitter on the phone. Being new to capacitive touch screen, I am having a few challenges typing my emails, but the adoption curve seems to be steep enough so far. Currently using this phone with my second cell phone connection, still leaving the contacts on the Blackberry with my primary carrier. Will make a switchover of the phones during next weekend.

Haven’t put in additional memory on the phone yet, want to test it with the basic memory for a few days. Hence haven’t downloaded many apps yet. Using the default ones that come with the Gingerbread (2.3.3) installation on the phone.

Will post more updates after I play with the phone for a while.

Xylo @ 12345

20 Dec

My Xylo clocked 12345km on the odometer this morning while I am reaching work. Air Conditioner consumption also is at a nice reading – 4444 units. Here are the pics taken using a low megapixel camera on cell phone.

The miles on this (almost – bought on 29th Dec 2009) two year old vehicle are very low, justified by the fact that this vehicle is used mostly during weekends, long drives and occasional trips to work. In the company of three other cars at home, this guy gets very less time on the road during weekdays.

Two years and there are no major issues with the vehicle. All minor issues are fixed during regular service visits. Overall, a great buy and value for money, with very low maintenance costs.

Looking Back – Email to Blog Transformation

15 Dec

Stumbled upon an old email to a group thread, that announced my personal blog and indicated a deviation from the habit of sending emails to relatives and friends groups. This email is sent sometime in Aug 2006 to a group mail of relatives, after I am confident that I am writing blogs regularly. Snipped out personal details of others from that email.

In my case, I started writing lengthy blogs rather than sending lengthy emails ;-).

Read my blog at
http://www.theraju.com/
and especially the personal blog content at
http://www.theraju.com/?cat=4
I may update this more often than the emails I have been sending. The only issue would be that blog content is generic and politically correct, for it to be sitting on a blog.

Good to know that kids are doing fine. And good to know that you are managing some time to go for movies.

[snip]
Me and latha have lot of backlog for movies. Only this week, we have seen Vikramarkudu. That will give you an idea of our backlog ;-).

We still need to see bommarillu, but don’t have a slot in calendar for next 2-3 weeks.

Didn’t dare to go near to a theater playing KANK. :-). Most of the web reviews in the first 1-2 days was that the movie is excellent. Anybody who watched the movie said that the movie is a bakwaas.

Spurthi and Surya are busy with some class tests this week. Implies that Latha is also busy.

Well, thats all for now. Celebrate Vinayaka Chavithi. Will send some photos soon.

I really love the opening statement – I started writing lengthy blogs :-). 5+ years down the lane, the habit continued.

Upgrade to WordPress 3.3

13 Dec

WordPress announced their new version,  WordPress 3.3 (codename Sonny), a few hours ago. I upgraded my blog software to WordPress 3.3. This version presents a good amount of niceties to the admin users of the blog software.

  • Pointer Tips
  • Media Drag/Drop Uploader
  • Better Navigation Menus
  • Revamped Help

The Dashboard of WordPress is improving with every release. I got so used to some of the recent convenience features that I feel handicapped if I am administering other blogs with earlier releases of the software.

I may take till the next weekend to explore all the new features fully. As of now, the upgrade looks rock solid and nice.

There is a recent update to the theme that I use, Graphene. I updated that software too (to 1.5.6) and am a bit surprised by the absence of articles in the frontpage. A quick browse of the new configurations suggested that there is a “Front Page Options” section that enables me to select the list of categories that should be presented on the front page. Disabled that list and I am back to my original layout of the theme.

Social Media Screening and Government

07 Dec

Well, we always think that things would improve over time and people get wiser. But there are occasional corrective events that help us refine such a thought process of ours.

One such event of recent times is Mr. Sibal’s directive to the social networking sites on social media screening. There is a mention of upcoming “code of conduct” in that said meeting.

There are several flaws in that directive of Mr. Sibal that social media should screen out the objectionable content and a code of conduct is on the way.

First – content on social media is not owned or controlled or editable by a few companies. The companies may host the presentation of the content, but not the content itself. The actual content might be linked, syndicated or cross-referenced from elsewhere.

Second – the code of conduct is not easy to define. Laws are relatively easy to define, but not the code. Code is a collection of guidelines that may keep changing over time or based on situation. We see lot of amendments for laws themselves. A definition of code of conduct, by nature, is likely to go through much more amendments and changes over time. Defining the code of conduct is not a one time process.

Third – The code of conduct is not easy to enforce. We have seen the law enforcement itself takes considerable amount of resources. Law enforcement is needed for a relatively smaller set of people in the society and even then we struggle in ensuring resources for law enforcement. Code of conduct usually covers a bigger group of (often well qualified) people and it is a mighty task to enforce code of conduct. None of the social media companies might be equipped with such a large set of resources.

Fourth – Abiding by the code of conduct is not a top-down paradigm. It is always a across-the-board or bottom-up phenomenon. There is no way a subset of the involved parties can enforce code of conduct. There should be active participation from all stakeholders to maintain the code of conduct. (Note that the word maintain is used here rather than the word enforce.)

There are several other flaws, but I think I made my point already. I don’t support even an iota of irresponsible content in the cyberspace. More so when it has the potential to create rifts based on socioeconomic and religious planks. However, there is a huge difference between ensuring people write responsible content and ensuring responsible content by enforcement.

If the Government has enough will to draft a code of conduct, it should take that code to the masses, not to the companies. It should socialize the code, but should not try to enforce it using the arms of the companies.

Personally, I am curiously waiting for the code. Most of my excitement comes from the claim that freedom of speech is upheld when an author’s work on some verses is banned and freedom of speech is also upheld when a painter got away when he maligned the images of a goddess. Now I want to see the standards used for defining the code of conduct.
